DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Past \n Past Exhibits\n \n \n Dec 31\, 19696:00pm-6:00pm\n \n \n	[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1828″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Bid Here[/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]All proceeds collected from the final sale of this painting will be distributed to the Sharp Family fund established at Bank Independent\, Decatur AL. This original oil painting created by artist\, Mary Reed was inspired by an almost metaphysical event surrounding the death of Jason Sharp. The TV at the bar near where Jason worked at Mellow Mushroom stopped working earlier last week and a floating Samsung graphic had been the only visible image. Thursday the TV came on and had a purple background with a man sitting on a rocket-shaped chili pepper with fire coming from the back appeared on the screen. The image stayed in place and made the social media rounds and then Friday the TV resumed working again. Painting Dimensions- 12″x36″[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n

Bring a small backpack with a snack and drinking water. \nWild South hikes are part of our Alabama Outreach and Education program and are offered free of charge.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \nSign up or ask questions at janice@wildsouth.org\nor 256-974-6166.\nAdvance notice of your attendance is required.   \n[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”1778\,1779\,1780″][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n

Doug has collaborated with Alabama high school art students\, Priceville Elementary kindergartners and Artist\, Jerry Slayton for a portion of the exhibit to include whooping crane puppets\, found nature elements and digital art. Using drawing/mending\, hand paper making and natural dyes\, Doug’s work reflects his personal exploration of grief and mortality\, nesting\, mending\, memory\, the physical body and spirituality. His work intentionally uses fibers and dyes from Alabama to parallel and draw attention and ask searching questions about Alabama’s biodiversity. His love and reverence for the natural landscape of our area is unmistakable in his installations that allow the viewer to immerse themselves in a unique cognitive experience. \nSpecial hours during the Festival of the Cranes\nSaturday\, January 12\, 10-4pm\nSunday\, January 13\, 11-3pm[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”fineprint”]All images copyright of the artist.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInRight” width=”2/3″][vc_single_image image=”935″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” el_class=”extra_works” z_index=””][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”937″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”938″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”939″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n

SUMMARY:Creations of Hope: Quilts from Gee’s Bend
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” el_class=”single_event_top” z_index=””][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]Past \n Past Exhibits\n \n \n Dec 31\, 19696:00pm-6:00pm\n \n \n	[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Creations of Hope: Quilts from Gee’s Bend features over 25 quilts and other fabric works of art by members of the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective. Artists include Rachel George-Carey\, Lue Ida B. McCloud\, Lucy Mingo\, Flora Moore\, China Pettway\, Crayree Pettway\, Essie Pettway\, Janice Pettway\, Jessica Pettway-Witherspoon\, Lola Pettway\, Stella Pettway\, Florine Smith\, and Lucy Witherspoon. \nThe community of Gee’s Bend is nestled into a curve in the Alabama River southwest of Selma\, Alabama. Founded in antebellum times on the site of cotton plantations owned by Joseph Gee\, the town’s women developed a distinctive\, bold\, and sophisticated quilting style with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Modern Art having been compared to the works of Henri Matisse and Paul Klee.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”fineprint”]All images copyright of the artist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInRight” width=”2/3″][vc_single_image image=”737″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” el_class=”extra_works” z_index=””][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Throughout much of the twentieth century\, making quilts was considered a domestic responsibility for women in Gee’s Bend. As young girls\, many of the women trained or apprenticed in their craft with their mothers\, female relatives\, or friends. Other quilters\, however\, have been virtually self-taught. Women with large families often made dozens upon dozens of quilts over the course of their lives. \nIn 2003\, all the living quilters of Gee’s Bend — more than fifty women — founded the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective to serve as the exclusive means of selling and marketing the quilts being produced by the women of the Bend. The Collective is owned and operated by the women of Gee’s Bend. Every quilt sold by the Gee’s Bend Quilt Collective is unique\, individually produced\, and authentic.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]The women of the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective all live in the area of Rehoboth\, Alberta and Boykin\, Alabama. The women of Gee’s Bend have developed a distinctive\, bold\, and sophisticated quilting style based on traditional American and African American quilts\, but with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art. The quiltmakers passed their skills and aesthetic down through at least six generations to the present. \nThe women consider the process of “piecing” the quilt “top” to be highly personal. In Gee’s Bend\, the top—the side that faces up on the bed—is always pieced by a quilter working alone and reflects a singular artistic vision. The subsequent process of “quilting” the quilt—sewing together the completed top\, the batting (stuffing)\, and the back—is sometimes then performed communally\, among small groups of women.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n
