ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Sonya Clemons’ exhibit, “Sweet Home Alabama”, focuses on different elements of home, specifically her home here in Alabama. Her sources of inspiration range from her own personal surroundings to the State itself. “I think there’s a lot of good here in Alabama and seeing that good, I believe, is a way to relate with others and bring people together.” – Sonya Clemons

A reception for this exhibit will be held in the gallery on Friday, July 18th, from 6-7:30.

ARTIST BIO

Sonya Clemons is known simply by her title, “The Artlady”, which she is called by many Alabama locals. She officially began her career as an artist in 1996, but she has been drawing her whole life. She often tells people it is the only thing she knows how to do and how she communicates. Her many accomplishments include designing a Panoply poster, being named one of the Women That Shape the State, and a Commendation from the Governor for years of service.

Clemons first began her art career as a “brush for hire” and eventually became a muralist for the Madison County School System, where she painted over 50 Arts in Education based murals. As an artist, Clemons enjoys focusing on the community and culture in Alabama and the south. She creates art for both local and state governments, as well as organizations, which they feature to promote the area, the people, etc. Her passion is in creating art that can reach anyone and everyone.
