Rickie Higgins is a Southern mixed-media painter based in Decatur, Alabama, where he works from his downtown studio at The Art Loft, just across from the historic Princess Theatre. Known for his expressive faces, solitary chairs, and recent turn toward bold figurative work, Rickie’s paintings explore themes of absence, belonging, and human connection.
For more than 20 years, his work has been featured in juried shows across the Southeast, including Bluff Park, Kentuck, Monte Sano, River Clay, Panoply, Fairhope, and the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. He was honored as Panoply Poster Artist in both 2011 and 2012. His solo exhibitions include The Carnegie Visual Arts Center, The Little Green Store & Gallery (Huntsville), Kathleen’s Gallery, and Lyons Share Gallery (Fairhope).
Rickie began painting at age 35 after attending a workshop—a gift from his wife, Rebekah—that transformed his life and ignited a creative journey. At 50, he left teaching to become a full-time artist. His vivid use of color, distinct compositions, and expressive style have drawn collectors nationwide and earned him a respected voice in contemporary Southern art.
