Artists Statement
In recent years, efforts to alter or suppress accurate accounts of America’s history and the contributions of Black Americans have increased, including the removal of such information from schools, libraries, museums, and other public spaces. This troubling development highlights the ongoing need for education and inspired this collection of paintings celebrating Black History.
As art educators, we understand the power of visual communication. The classic alphabet cards that adorned classrooms nationwide became the foundation for highlighting key individuals and moments in Black History. By using this familiar and accessible design, we aim to engage viewers and emphasize that Black History is American History.
