A reception for this exhibit will be held on Tuesday, October 27, from 5-7 pm at the Huntsville International Airport.
“ShapeShifter” evolved from fever dreams that the artist experienced during her 2021 hospitalization with COVID-19. The artworks represent a departure from her usual representative style of oil painting, deeply exploring an emergence of creativity and intuition brought forth through encaustic mixed media.
The artist encases fragments of artifacts from her oil painting process within layers of beeswax, creating a literal background beneath the translucent layers. Each background then serves as a setting for the drawings and shapes freely shifting through those layers. “These shifts and layers are significant to my experience as I move through life, the past providing the background for all current experience while simultaneously laying the path to those occurrences yet to come.”- Mary H Reed
