A Guided Autumn Hike with Wild South in the Bankhead National Forest

Distance:  No more than 2.5 miles roundtrip
Level of Challenge:  Moderate
Leader:  Janice Barrett
All ages welcome
No dogs or smoking, please

Join Wild South staff on a guided hike into one of Alabama’s most spectacular places, the Bankhead National Forest.  After departing from the Wild South office in downtown Moulton, we will drive into the National Forest and enter a trail that will take us into a sandstone canyon, following a stream through a forest of old hardwoods and Eastern hemlocks and a waterfall or two.  In addition to immersion in clean air and solitude, hikers will learn about the natural and cultural history of the area.  This will be a great hike for children!

Expect to walk on a trail that will have exposed roots and rocks and some brief ups and downs.  There may be shallow, narrow stream crossings.

Wear clothing appropriate and comfortable for hiking and the weather.  Footwear with reliable tread (hiking boots or sneakers – yes!  Crocs – no) will give secure footing on slick rocks.

A walking stick or trekking poles will help if there are balance issues. Bring a small backpack with a snack and drinking water.

Wild South hikes are part of our Alabama Outreach and Education program and are offered free of charge.

Sign up or ask questions at janice@wildsouth.org

Advance notice of your attendance is required.
